Markets are the lifeblood of Mexico City. From busy open-air trading bazaars (called “tianguis”) to modern-day, mixed-use food halls, the city’s markets come in all shapes and sizes. Although the function of markets varies throughout time, they are always the place of daily interaction of residents.

The design tries to redefine different forms of markets and make them fit for the city’s texture nowadays as well as interweaving with the public space. After the consideration of integrating the traditional industrial history of the area, the vaulted roof elements of the surrounding buildings were used in the design.

Through the renovation, we hope to combine the vitality of the market with the new public space, attract more people around. At the same time, commercials can bring more tourists and promote the economic development of the area.

Many arch shape warehouses reflect the industrial history of this area. In the design, we developed different forms of arch elements, which were combined with different commercial types.

Spacial Strategies and Market Transformations

Three types of buildings are redesigned. By reorganize and renovate different forms of markets, the street become vibrant. Public spaces connected with commercial activities are brought back to daily life.
